First, you might ask why you would need to know how to represent and analzyze patterns.

What is this pattern? Use an expression to show your answer.
7,14,21,28,35

The pattern represented above is 7x. This means that each time you go up or down in the pattern it will be a factor of 7. For example, x7 where 7 equals x would equal 49 because 7x7=49.
The same pattern can be expressed in a bar graph or line graph. As a bar graph.....

The same information is displayed (7x) but it is now in graph form.
As a line graph....
The same idea applies but it is in line graph form.
Now try one! Here is a few examples that will help you make sure you know for sure that you can analyze patterns.

Every day Jim saves up his allowance to buy a new bike. Each week he receives $4.00. The bike he wants is $60.00. How many weeks does he have to save up his money until he can afford the bike? If x is equal to the number of weeks, what is x equal to?

First, display the expression (4.00x=60.00). You need to find x. You must now multiply 4 by a number until you get a number equal to 60 or slightly above 60. 4x15 is equal to 60. In this case we had exactly 60 so we did not need to go over.

Figure out these patterns:
1. 6,5.5,6.5,6,7,6.5,7.5
2. 2,4,3,6,5,10,9
3. 5,7,4,6,3,4,1
1. -.5 and then +1
2. x2 and then -1
3. +2 and then -3
